25th april 2010 re:Disability Discrimination
Dear Graeme,
Thanks you for getting in touch and for sending me the link, which I have looked at.
It's very worrying if there is disability discrimination towards housing tenants. I was also shocked to see the comments about losing playgrounds because the authorities find park benches easier to maintain!
I hope you will come back to me after May 6th and I will try to help.
Best wishes,
Amber

We have another inspection/survey to put up with today, this time it is Adult Social Care inspecting me, they are not coming out for us, they are coming out because it has been suggested that they should/could have been doing something to help they just need to cover their own backs, and on that subject most of the comments show how all of this makes life so unpleasant for me but it also has a massive impact on Lisa who`s job as a carer is hard and unpleasant enough sometimes without having to face the difficulties of having no toilet or bathing facilities, no bed! Adult Social Care have been happy for her to cope with that for years and they cannot say that they did`nt know.

Sorry I have`nt done much the last few days but I have been quite ill, I will catch up on everything over the bank holiday. I`ll start another comments page this one is full, and I will contine with Roberts page as well, I have taken some photo`s of the work Booker and Best have done this week and I suppose in a way some of it`s funny, the new fan in the bathroom is a great example of the quality of their work because it only has one fault. Can you guess? They forgot the on/off switch.
Apart from that and the location of it, its okay. The one in the kitchen that was`nt so funny, anyway look at the photo`s and see what you think.
We just noticed they turned our freezer off yesterday, Cowboys!

It took nine surveys before Amicus Horizon finally gave in and agreed to installing an extractor fan in the kitchen, this was not an installation that I have campaigned for it was a safety requirement put forward following an inspection by Hastings Borough Council because of the boiler and the cooker.
Booker and Best survey stated on tape that the fan would be installed in the kitchen and wired to the boiler switch, then the workman arrived to carry out this work, this is what happened:
The electrician first removed all of the plug sockets in the kitchen removing the surrounding grout or sealant around the sockets and counter.
Then he called me into the dining room/bedroom and said: You will have to remove this fitted cupboard so that I can wire the fan to the socket behind it.
I asked him if there was another alternative because I am not capable of dismantling that cupboard and even if I was it would cause damage to the wallpaper.
The electrician was not happy with my request and said: If I have to take the wiring through the ceiling I will have to take up all the carpet and laminated flooring upstairs.
Well I cannot move the cupboard, I replied.
The electrician called me out again about five minutes later, can you empty this cupboard in the hallway? then I can drill the wiring through the wall into the hallway and then cut through to the dining room.
By this time I was getting a little concerned because we were wandering further and further away from the kitchen which has nine sockets plus a cooker point, a boiler fuse switch and timer but not wanting to get into a dispute because I was quite ill at the time and because he had deposited some of our things on the stairs already we just gave in and emptied the cupboard.
After we had emptied the cupboard I told him that it was ready and I decided to ask him why he could not wire the fan to the boiler switch.  That is no good he told me, it is not on a ring, it is just a spur. This fan, I persisted, has been surveyed nine times and they said that they would wire it to the boiler. They are idiots he replied, that would be illegal.
I gave up and went back into the other room to be ill. Two minutes later he called me again: You can put it all back now, I am going to wire it to the boiler, I looked at him quizzically, I phoned the office they said it would be okay. Feeling assured I went back in the other room.
When the end finally arrived I was surprised that the old vent had not been used as the spot for the new fan but I was told that it was not suitable because it had been painted over. I was surprised at this because he had used the other painted over vent to locate the fan, I do not know which one is most practicable it just seemed odd that a fan placed by a cooker should be placed in a position where it is blocked by a unit.
I was also more than a little bit concerned at the wooden block used to cover the hole left by the old vent cover. They told me that it would be brick?. Wood is fine I was told. I was not reassured because it occurred to me that a vent placed above a cooker and a deep fat frier would attract grease and fat and it also worried me that a cooker is probably the likeliest place for a housefire to begin and as we had been left without a working fire alarm for over eight months by Booker and Best and Amicus Horizon these things are a genuine concern.
So at last the kitchen fan has been installed, requested by the council in early February delayed by Darren Goodsell and Ron Grimmer until the end of April. Good job or bad job? I have no idea, we will regrout the sockets and counter and get over the unnecessary inconvenience caused by their lack of professional knowledge.
But... that was`nt the end of it. I have also replaced the bathroom fan he said as he went out the door, I got fed up with waiting for the other guy to arrive to repair it so I have replaced it with a new one.
The bathroom fan is a typical Booker and Best success story, it is in the wrong location and has been waiting for relocation as ordered by Amicus Horizon for over two years but the real sad truth about this success story is that the fan lacks one very vital component: A switch! thats right, it can`t be turned on because they forgot to install the pull switch that the manufacturers assure me would have been in the box with full instructions on how to attach it.
24 hours later we discovered our freezers had been turned off!
We posted his jumper that he left behind to Booker and Best windmill house windmill road ponswood industrial estate stleonards on sea east sussex tn38 9by

Why is Amicus Horizon not under Supervision! the quality of their staff is dreadful, they have very little knowledge of housing needs in regards to repairs/safety and their treatment of the disabled tenants is shameful and ALL under the watchful eye of Hastings Council!

that slidin door is really bad there should of fited it in right not like that how silly is it for them to do that the disabled person cant use that door what if he or she had the door full on top on them they need to fit it in right
